Nagar Kirtan is a procession in honour of the Sikh scripture, Siri Guru Grant Sahib, on occassions of gurpuruab, a commemoration parade. Guru Granth sahib is carried on a float, through the streets. Sometimes the float is pulled by a vehicle and other times when smaller, the Guru is placed on a palki, a kind of platform, and is carried on the shoulders by Sikh devotees.
Great photo! I love all the colors. It truly speaks volumes.
Lovely picture! Where was it taken?
gorgeous colors - very nice pic. happy ww
I, too, love the colors. They are so fresh and vibrant…full of life.
What a wonderful photo! I would love to see a photo of the Guru on a palki.
I can’t be sure of the location. I’m guessing in Punjab because the nagar kirtans I’ve attended in Ca with crowds of primrily Punjabi Sikhs have primarily taken place with the Guru installed on large floats pulled by vehicles.
This one appears to be a palki carried on the shoulder. The only palkis I have seen in th states are much smaller and the devotees of mixed descent.
It is also worth noting in Punjab the streets are much more narrow, many do not accomodate motor vehicles.
Wonderful colors. I wonder what is goingon
What beautiful, colorful images accompany your writings, although in this case, no words! Great stuff and thank you.
What a colorful float! Looks like a very special occasion.
Wonderful colorful photo. I wish I could have been there.
Now that’s a proper way to travel through town!
A lovely photograph and one that gives us an insight into another culture. Thank you for another great WW. Kate
That’s a very nice tradition. Thanks for sharing it with us. It reminds me of the Italian Catholic tradition of carrying saints on their feast days in parades through the streets. I’m in Italy now and we’re gearing up for St. Peter/St. Paul Day on June 29. Men will be carrying the saint on their shoulders in a parade as well.
Beautiful photo. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. Happy WW.
