Sikhism has its roots in pre-partition Punjab now part of Pakistan and Northern India. All of the required prayers of Nitnem and Gurbani (the Guru's word) of Sikh Scriptures from the Guru Granth Sahib are written in the Gurmukhi Script which is nearly identical to the Punjabi alphabet. The Gurmukhi script is phonetic. Each sound has a unique symbol, which makes the alphabet relatively easy to learn with practice. However the Gurmukhi language of Gurbani differs from modern day Punjabi language requiring study to understand even for a Punjabi speaking person.
All Sikhs regardless of origin are required to learn to read the Gurmukhi script in order to be able to read Nitnem and the Guru Granth Sahib. Translations and interpretations of Guru Granth Sahib are for study purposes and not meant to take the place of Gurbani. Anyone unable to read Gurbani has the option to listen to live or recorded required prayers of Nitnem in the original Gurmukhi.
Gurdwaras usually have weekly classes, and weeklong camps during holidays, available on a donation only basis, which offer different levels of learning:
- Beginning - reading and writing the Gurmukhi alphabet.
- Intermediate - reading of Nitnem, required prayers.
- Advanced - reading the scripture of Guru Granth Sahib.
Many free online Punjabi learning courses offer audio and visual aids.

How fascinating. May I ask a question? Is this language learning requirement meant to preserve the purity of meaning of nitnem and Guru Granth Sahib?
Thanks!
The Guru of the Sikhs is the ’shabd’(hymn) or the actual word written in the granth (volume). So when you translate or interpret you get an idea of the meaning of the shabd but cannot be considered as the shabd or Guru. All of gurbani (gurus word)is written as poetry with particular meter to a particular raag, a musical measure coreesponding to a partcular time of day when it is meant to be sung (as kirtan).
I think it is wonderful children are being taught traditions, values, and language that endears them to their own culture. My boyfriend is Jewish and he said that Yiddish is now a dying language because it was not taught to children for so long.
hmm. I learnt Sihk in class today and wanted to take further steps. I think it is great that children are being taught differtnt religeons. As some schools just hide it. In year 4 we had a budda in our class and Miss Meadows never tould us about religeouns and none of the other teachers told us about religeons. In year 5 and 6 our teachers refused to talk to us about religeons. They thought it would affend the white. So we never knew what different religeons were!!
So i thing different religeons are great especially Sikhism. It is Realy interesting learing how others live and their believes about god an dour world. Year7 girl.(E.W)
Hi Year 7 girl (E.W.)
I’m really happy to hear you are getting the opportunity to learn about other religions. I think it is very important to help teach the values of tolerance and acceptance. Curiosity is very natural and indeed the beginning of the learning experience. What we don’t know can make us fearful and suspicious. Learning is much more fun and fascinating!
I’m curious what part of the world you live in. I suppose many schools believe in the separation of church and state and so never touch religious subjects. You are lucky to have a teacher who is willing to educate students about these subjects.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
I read the comments of 7 year girl.I think there is too much power in shearing, actully we nevar discuss in our house evan with the children because of business or we want to spend our time for our useless habits. In this atmosphare how kids can learn about our great great religon. So I think we should start sharing in our home which has remarkable power
“waheguru jee ka khalsa waheguru jee ki fateh.”
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji ki Fateh
Gurmit signh ji, you are so right. Sikhs have a great sense of community which has to be imparted to children. They have so many challenges growing up. Talking and sharing with children is very important as they learn to trust and confide in parents. It makes the family closer and helps everyone stay connected, and gives them strength to face whatever happenes in life.
Going by all the contents posted till date. I think i can easily offer my services to people who are inquisitive about sikhism. I may not be a highly rated philosopher but all i am trying to do is to be a true sikh. WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH.
Yes ji. Take advantage of every opportunity to share your knowledge at what ever level there is always someone eager to learn.

Question:
How do you explain where people have gone after death before ‘Sikhism’ was around. It’s only been 500 years so where did people go after they died?
Also do you think the Bible is truth and fact? It has been proven by even Athiest Scientists the the Bible is accurate and Jesus died and was raised from the dead – Not that they want to believe it, but the historical facts speak for themselves. So if everything in the Christian Bible is fact & it’s been around since the beginning of time, how can you deny this is the right religion? There is nothing in the Christian Bible that has holes in it – this is not just someone saying this, it’s fact.
God has done far too many miracles in my life as a Christian to follow anything else. Not to mention I feel him because he is inside me, protecting me, helping me, loving me. I like to find out about other religions because I live in a multi-religious town and I need to understand other religions too so i’m not ignorant.
Hi Christian,
A better place for questions and discussions would be the forum.
Sikhs basically believe that souls reincarnate into various life forms until they are enlightened at which point they cease taking birth into material existence and remain as spirit only united with the divine. This happened prior to Sikhism and shall continue as per divine order.
The creator and creation are one single organism part and participle however it manifests.
I personally accept the bible as a historical account whose accuracy is as reliable as it’s authors and interpreters. I feel that much is made of little when it comes to interpretation. However having heard the various interpretations of prophecy all of my life should any of them prove true it would not come as a shock as much as a surprise.
I am a personal believer in miracles as I have also witnessed many in my life both as a Christian and as a Sikh. I do not believe we can put any limits on God or the compassion and power of the creator. I believe the divine to be un-denominational. The creator is infinite and beyond our comprehension, self existent before humanity came into being and shall continue after humanity has passed away.
The Sikh philosophy encourages others to follow their convictions, in your case Christianity, and to strive to be as Christlike as possible. To really study Christianity in depth and glean as much good from your way of life as possible. Sikhs do not encourage or expect others to convert, but will be supportive of anyone whose convictions lead them into Sikhism as a way of life.
I think its very important that we learn about others ways, so that we can better understand each other and to foster peace and harmonious existence.
