The iron plate looks a wok. In my dad’s younger days, he was quite skillful with a wok. He worked almost his entire life as a cook at a Chinese restaurant.

Free fried food is universal. Fried food can bring people together like nothing else, in fact. Italians, for example, have zeppole. Americans have funnel cake. Sikhs have this. All I know is that I can never resist free fried food. It is one universal language that I can bite into with joy. Yum!

Barbara I’m not 100% sure because I don’t think I’ve ever had any just like these with round shape. But think they could be aloo tikaa or fried potato patty. Not sure if they are seasoned or just simple with salt. They stood there and fried up thousands.

(22) sikhism says:

Sikhs are impartial and feed the needy or the greedy and even just the curious. In fact most Sikhs won’t take no for an answer when they offer you food unless you refuse at least three times, and then you are likely to find a plate on your lap anyway.

I was wrong. I thought they were gulab jamun and the sugar syrup was not quite in the photo.

October 21, 2009 at 4:13 pm
(26) sikhism says:

I think they are potato because a woman nearby was grating boiled potatoes. (there is a picture of her in the gallery) There is also a sort of dipping sauce it seem, a bit further down the table.
The thing about the Yuba City parade, Walk a little further down and someone will be hailing you with gulab jamun and all manner of eatables.

Hi, and thanks for stopping by my blog.

I always enjoy your photos, and I learn a lot from them, as well.

The food in this picture looks delicious. I must say that I haven’t yet met a fried food that I didn’t like.

The hot iron plate looks pretty cool too. Is gas piped directly into the receptacle underneath? It looks almost wok-like.
