When United Sikhs UK got a call at 7am on Monday, April 19, 2010 , that airline passengers had been stranded in the Heathrow terminal for days due to volcanic activity preventing flights, they immediately went into action. Eight Sikhs volunteered to team up and provided hot beans and rice, bottled water, tea fresh fruit and even chocolate to stranded passengers at Heathrow Terminal 3.
Ashes from the eruption of Volcano Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH'-plah-yer-kuh-duhl) in Iceland interrupted normal European airline travel leaving passengers from the United States, Australia and Vietnam stranded in Heathrow UK with little alternative other than to sit and wait and go hungry.
One volunteer, Jaswinder Kaur, had herself been stranded just days before in Frankfort and "knew how it felt." Moved to "provide solace," she and her team members welcomed the invitation to return when asked to come back by grateful passengers who could hardly believe their good fortune. Passengers got in to the spirit and helped with distributing the free meals to make sure everyone got fed.
