Young Sikh American citizens, the children of USA immigrants who come to this country to avoid religious persecution in their homeland, pose proudly with the Statue of Liberty, as though she’s got their back!

What a perfect photo for this week ahead of the fourth of July holiday! Truly, I sometimes forget that it still means something to be an American. I’m here in Italy now and lots of people are angry about our government and they blame the United States for the economic situation and the loss of lives in the Middle East. They are right. But we still have freedoms and opportunities that foreigners, even in other Western democracies, will never have. That’s something special. This photo says it all!

What a great reminder to us all never to lose sight of how precious freedom is. Oh, sure, we are guaranteed to make mistakes, but that is also part of how we can grow — as individuals, as a society, and as a global community.

Let us all cherish freedom.
