Featured: Kartal With Zingle Fail

Do you think maybe its time for new kartal instruments?

Kartal are popular in group kirtan especially during Rain sabaee which goes on all night. Kartal zingles are paired together to produce a tinkling jingle sound, and generally hold up for several years. However with regular play kartal do eventually fail. I have literally seen piles of sawdust beneath two wooden kartal being clapped together by a kirtan enthusiast. After 12 hours of continuous vigorous play, the metal strips may loosen, or brass zingles wear through, and fall out.

Do your kartal look like these?

kartal is a new word to me, but the instrument reminds me of a tambourine. I bet they sound lovely, they are pretty too.

Interesting! I guess kartal makers are kept busy repairing them & making new ones all the time.

I played once a tambourine which looks like the Kartal, it was during a play at school. Is very good to keep the rhythm !

It looks as though these instruments may have produced a lot of “joyful noise.”

It reminds me of a tambourine which I’ve never played so I doubt I could play that!

I agree that it looks like a tambourine. I can’t imagine playing an instrument for 12 hours non-stop.
