The sacrifice of the martyred Mahja Sikhs, known as the Chali Mukte, or 40 Liberated Ones, is remembered in the Sikh prayer of daily Ardas. Five historical gurdwaras and memorial shrines have been built, and renovated, over the centuries at various spots in Muktsar where the 1705 battle of Khirdana took place. Led by the woman warrior Mai Bagho, the Mahja Sinks laid down their lives to defend Guru Gobind Singh from relentless Mughal forces.
