Guru Teg Bahadar succeeded Eighth Guru Har Krishan on Saturday, the 14th day of the waxing moon in the month of Chet year 1721 SV, or March 30, 1664, of the Julian Calendar and April 16, 1661 A.D. of the Nanakshahi calendar.

Guru Har Krishan indicated his successor would be found in Bakala and sent an inaugural delegation to Bakala with an offering of copper coins and a coconut. Baba Gur Ditta, son of Baba Buddha anointed Ninth Guru Teg Bahadur on August 1, 1664. Meanwhile 22 imposters set themselves up as Guru. Makan Shah arrived October 9, 1664 and exposed and routed out the imposters from Bakala proclaiming Guru Teg Bahadur the "True Guru" once and for all.

Guru Teg Bahadar left his earthy body when beheaded by order of Emperor Aurangzeb. Following the torture and martyrdom of three disciples, Mati Das, Sati Das and Dayal Das, Guru Teg Bahadar ji's execution took place on Thursday, the fifth day of the waxing moon, Sudi in the month of Maghar, 1732 SV, or November 11, 1675 C.E. (Common Era), and November 24, 1675 A.D. according to the Nanakshahi calendar.

According to the Nanakshahi calendar year 544, Guru Teg Bahadar Ji's martyrdom is commemorated on November 24, 2012.
