The term shaheed refers to a martyr. The word shaheed relates to the root word shahadat meaning testimony, or witness. A shaheed is literally a witness who dies in testimony of their faith. In Sikhism, a shaheed may be any one who is martyred because of religious factors such as:
- One who has fallen in battle.
- One who dies under duress as a result of upholding faith.
- One who on who chooses death rather than forced conversion.
- One who selflessly sacrifices life willingly for the well being of others.
- One who dies as a result of being killed in regards to any religious reasons.

Spiritual guides, prophets, devotees, faithful innocents and martyrs,
Saekh masaa-ik kaajee mulaa dar darvaes raseed ||
Religious leaders, mystics, judges, priests, and ascetics who beg spiritual attainment at his door,
Barkat tin ko agalee parradae rehan darood ||3||
