Definition:

The word sikh means seeker, to seek, to learn, or to teach. In Sikhism, the term Sikh refers to a spiritual seeker or disciple. The Sikh student seeks spiritual knowledge, divine instruction and guidance on the path of enlightenment from their guru, the holy scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib.

A Sikh is defined as one who believes in five essentials:

Every Sikh maintains a distinct identity outlined by Sikhism's code of conduct:

  • Hair is never cut or altered from birth (or conversion) onwards.
  • Sikh men wear a turban and kachhera undergarment.
  • Sikh women may choose to wear turban and do not veil the face.
  • Baptized Sikhs wear five articles of faith.
