The word sikh means seeker, to seek, to learn, or to teach. In Sikhism, the term Sikh refers to a spiritual seeker or disciple. The Sikh student seeks spiritual knowledge, divine instruction and guidance on the path of enlightenment from their guru, the holy scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib.
A Sikh is defined as one who believes in five essentials:
- One God
- Ten gurus
- Guru Granth Sahib
- The Gurus' teachings
- Sikh Initiation according to Guru Gobind Singh
Every Sikh maintains a distinct identity outlined by Sikhism's code of conduct:
- Hair is never cut or altered from birth (or conversion) onwards.
- Sikh men wear a turban and kachhera undergarment.
- Sikh women may choose to wear turban and do not veil the face.
- Baptized Sikhs wear five articles of faith.
