The parade procession is called Nagar Kirtan, which means parading through town singing hymns in the streets during festivals. The parade route loops through the town of Nankana's two main streets. The panj pyara walk ahead of a float bearing the Guru Granth Sahib which is surrounded by Sikh devotees walking on foot, and followed by devotees riding on floats.
The modern day Nankana is a small town with narrow streets which are paved with dusty yellow bricks. Two main streets are lined with shops, open stalls, and houses. The stalls are built of brick on three sides and have wide roll down, corrugated metal doors facing the street. Common walls join many of the buildings. Some of the more modern shops have store front windows. Houses may be simple one story brick dwellings with four walls or two stories having wooden balconies and carved shutters overlooking the street with inner courtyards.
