The panj pyara, five beloved ones, walk at the head of the parade. Each of the panj pyara carry the nishan, the Sikh flag. Behind the panj pyara is a paliquin which carries the Guru Granth, Sikhism's holy scripture. The Granth is taken out of the historic gurdwara and paraded through the streets of Nankana in honor of Guru Nanak's 500th gurpurab, or birthday celebration, and the return of Sikhs to Pakistan after 50 years of partition.
