How to Store a Portable Altar
When not in use the portable altar ought to be set aside and covered in a clean spot. A large bag may be used to protect the altar when being stored. To make a bag like the one shown it will take:- 2 yards of fabric 45 inches wide or 2 1/2 yards of fabric 36 inches wide, and matching thread.
To stitch the bag:
- Fold the fabric in half wrong side out to make a rectangle about 36 inches by 45 inches.
- Trim about 6 inches from one side so that the rectangle measures 30 inches by 45 inches.
- 2 yards of fabric 45 inches wide - Pin and stitch along the length of one side and along the width of one side, leaving one end open.
- (Alternate fabric dimension) 2 1/3 yard of fabric 36 inches wide - Pin and stitch both sides along the length of the fabric leaving one end open.
- Turn the edges of the opening under twice and and stitch a wide hem.
Use pieces trimmed from the fabric to make a strap if desired:
- If necessary, cut or trim a strip to measure between 4-6 inches wide and 3-4 feet long.
- Fold the raw edges together so that they meet in the middle along the the length of the strap.
- Fold again and stitch along the entire length of both outer edges.
- Fold under, or tuck in the raw edges of both ends.
- If desired leave 2-4 inches of the top part of the bag free so that it may be folded over.
- Pin and sew several inches of each end of the strap to either side of the bag securely.
- Stitch around each inner edge of the strap secured to the bag to form a rectangle and then across the strap and then diagonally if necessary.
Fold or tuck in the hemmed opening of the bag and secure with a large blanket pin when storing the portable altar.
