Reversible Canopy
A canopy is a required feature which helps to protect the altar from dust, insect droppings or other debris, and excessive light. The canopy is made with a ruffle and is supported by the canopy frame. Hang canopy with the contrasting side as shown to coordinate with matching ramala coverlet.
Materials needed to make a reversible canopy:
- One yard fabric.
- One yard contrasting material.
- Matching thread.
- (Optional) Eight yards of decorative trim.
Make ruffle from fabric matching cushion cover and pillow:
- Fold fabric in half lengthwise and trim 10" of the doubled fabric from the outer edge to use in making a ruffle for the canopy.
- Gather each section of ruffle with a wide basting stitch running along the length about 1/4 inch in from the cut edge.
- Pin or tack a piece of matching fabric about 25"x37" to the canopy frame, right side down.
- Loosely pin gathered ruffle to the piece of fabric on the frame starting at the center of each side. Selvedge (outermost edge) should hang down.
- Pull basting thread to adjust gathers.
- Tie off the thread by winding it around a pin at the end of each section.
- Remove ruffles and stitch sections together.
- Fold under the edges where the sections are joined, and double stitch to hide raw ends.
- (Optional) Stitch trim to the selvedge outermost edge with matching thread.
- Remove fabric from frame. Cut a piece 25"x37" from one end of contrasting fabric.
- Pin and adjust gathers to the main piece with right sides together.
- Stitch ruffles in place.
- Turn under the raw edges of the contrasting piece and pin to the main piece so that both of the right sides, and ruffles, are facing out.
- Carefully stitch the contrasting piece in place.
