The Sikh baby names beginning with D listed here have spiritual meanings. Like most Indian names, Sikh names are meant to have spiritual meanings that relate somehow to the divine enlightener and supreme being Waheguru, the creator Ik Onkar, or the 10 Gurus. Most Sikhism names are chosen from the scripture of Guru Granth Sahib. Others are regional Punjabi names. Initiated Sikhs may choose the surname Khalsa.

Phonetic Pronunciation

English spelling of Sikh spiritual names is phonetic as it is derived from the Gurmukhi script. Different spellings may sound the same, or be simplistic spellings of Gurmukhi consonants represented by the English letter D, but which have distinctly different sounds:

  • D: tongue pressed against the back of the upper teeth
  • Dh: tongue pressed against the back of the upper teeth aspirated with a puff of air
  • Dd: tongue is curled back to touch the roof of the mouth behind the gum ridge
  • Ddh: tongue is curled back to touch the roof of the mouth behind the gum ridge aspirated with a puff of air

Adaptations

Spiritual names starting with D may be combined with other Sikh names. By adding a prefix or suffix it is possible to create unique baby names for males or females.
