Choosing a Sikh Name
The Sikh baby names listed here have spiritual meanings. Some are taken from the Guru Granth Sahib and others from the Panjabi language. English spelling of Sikh names are phonetic as they come from the Gurmukhi script. Different spellings may sound the same. A single O has the vowel sound of oat. Double oo sounds like boot and corresponds to a different Gurmukhi letter. O and Oo are not interchangeable.
First names may be composed from one or more words, and are interchangeable for both boys and girls. All girl's names end with Kaur (princess) and all boy's names end with Singh (lion).
The method for deciding upon a Sikh baby name, or spiritual name, is to select a hukam, a random verse, from Guru Granth Sahib. The first Gurmukhi letter of the vak, or verse, determines the first letter of the name to be chosen. If parents wish, the hukam from Harmandir Sahib, the golden temple, which is read on the day of a baby’s birth may be consulted instead.
