After the Sikh mother gives birth to her child, the family prepares Prashad, made of butter, sugar and flour, to place before the Guru Granth Sahib. The family offers Ardas, a prayer, for the child and reads a Hukam, a verse from the sacred scripture. A first name for the child is chosen beginning with the first letter of the verse read. Additionally all female children receive the name of Kaur, and all male children the name of Singh.

Khalsa parents respect the hair of the child and keep it intact always. It is the duty of every Sikh mother and father to have their child educated, and raised in Sikhism.
