A tabla is a drum-like percussion instrument with a skin head. The tabla player is skilled at playing taal, a rhythm having a certain set of beats to accompany a particular musical score. Vigorous playing may cause the heads to loosen. A number of tablas stand by ready to provide a quick replacement if needed.
