From the article: Is Easter a Good Idea for Sikhs?
Easter is a Christian holiday having it's origins in Pagan rites. Easter occurs right around the same time as Vaisakhi, an important Sikh holiday. The Khalsa initiate renounces other ways of life including festivities which are not a part of Sikhism. However it is not considered a breach of conduct to join in celebrations which are not strictly forbidden is it? Is celebrating Easter a distraction from Vaisakhi festivites? How do you handle Easter in your family? What guidance can be found in Gurbani or the Sikh code of conduct? Share your reasons why Sikhs should or should not celebrate Easter. Share Your Reasons
Sikhs Celebrate Easter?
- I can understand why many Sikhs would celebrate Christmas because it's a really big deal. But Easter? I suppose I would let my kids hunt Easter eggs and some of the other pagan aspect of the holiday, but I can't imagine why any Sikh would celebrate the supposed resurrection of the Godman Jesus of Nazareth.

Why Sikhs Should Celebrate Easter
- Here in England I find that the Sikh community always has partaken in Western/Christian celebrations such as Christmas and Easter, but we also strive to keep our own festivals and traditions alive and many Sikh events are publicly organized such as nagar kirtans [procession through the streets singing hymns] where people of other races are encouraged to join in and find out about us. I think it is good for everybody to share traditions and customs so that we can learn to respect and appreciate our fellow humans, if everybody had this attitude I feel that there would be less wars, human poverty, and un-necessary suffering in the world.
