The Gulf Oil gusher is a reminder of how precious a gift of life is our environment. This habitat earth has been especially prepared for us by a creator who made provision for the need of every creature. Like any precious gift, this garden earth needs to be well tended by its inhabitants. We need to be serious in our quest to find harmonious ways of living with our environment while developing energy to meet thirst for progress without spoiling our surroundings.
The ability to understand the concept of Ik Onkar comes with the realization that we each are one with our creator and with all of creation. What affects any one part, affects the whole. Poisoning any part of it is poisonous to the entire system. We have to recognize the interdependence of our entire eco system in order to maintain the balance and health of that system. Believing that we can isolate any portion of it and trash it as we please does not address the reality of theology and ecology in its entirety. Perhaps understanding that we are an inseparable from the divine and therefore inseparable from each other might help us to be less selfish and strive to be more selfless in the realization that whenever we give we also receive.
Stop and take a deep breath, Inhale and exhale. This simple process on which we depend for life is an exchange with plants that cohabitate earth with us providing oxygen for the air we breathe. We have to find a means of producing energy which allow both species to propagate, and flourish. Our vast oceans, which provide another crucial element on which we are dependent for life, are showing stress resulting from our polluting habits. In some ways the terrible consequences of Gulf Oil disaster are a blessing in that the enormity of this tragedy has the power to awaken us to a reality which can no longer be ignored. We can't just wait for the other guy to change things. We have to make changes ourselves, every one of us, together, acting as one, beginning now, and seriously search for ways to lessen and break oil dependence.
