Plans are underway for Darbar Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, to receive solar energy. The Guru Raam Das langer (free kitchen and dining hall) complex is to have a 4000, liter capacity solar hot water heater installed. The langar complex currently serves free meals to well over 50,000 people each day. The house of Guru Arjun Dev (Nivas) is to receive an 18 KW solar power plant.
This is wonderful new considering it follows in the wake of rising temperatures which are occurring in Indonesian oceans where water temperatures of 93 degrees Fahrenheit are causing unprecedented coral bleaching. Natural warming combined with human factors caused a staggering 7 degree temperature increase in 2010 alone resulting in an 80% die of coral reefs, and an immense negative impact on sea life. Many more global efforts at conservation and clean energy are required by every scope of humanity. All Sikhs need to follow the example set at Harmandir Sahib and urge their local gurdwaras to become green energy conscious, and also to begin making changes as to how energy is supplied and consumed in the home.
