Gurpreet Kaur, Keerat Kaur, and Japjit Kaur, members of the Gurmat Gian Group, are daughters of Guru Gobind Singh who share the hymns of Gurbani with their exquisite singing of shabads in the melodious hue of 31 classical raag.
Their blog contains more than 40 kirtan videos. These young Sikh women typically "rehearse 6 - 8 hours daily, singing hymns 60 - 80 times" before recording. They are accompanied by classical instrumentalist Sandeep Singh with the dilruba, and tabla players such as Paramjot Singh of Guiness Book of World Records fame.
When I heard the shabad, Oha Prem Piri, a composition of Guru Arjan, in one of their kirtan videos, I had to share it. I also had to delve deeper into the words and meanings:
"Ohaa prem piree ||1|| rehaao ||
Only my beloved do I love. ||1||Pause||
Kanik maanik gaj moteean laalan neh naah nehee ||1||
Gold, bangles, ivory, opulent pearls and rubies, I love not, nor need. ||1||
Raaj na bhaag na hukam na saadan ||
Kingdoms, nor fortune, nor authority, nor indulgences heed.
Kichh kichh na chaahee ||2||
For such trifle trappings I have no desire. ||2||
Charnan sarnan santan bandan ||
The Lords feet favor saintly devotion.
Sukho sukh paahee ||
Enjoying peaceful consolation.
Naanak tapat haree ||
Nanak extinguishes the fire.
Milae prem piree ||3||3||143||
Upon meeting my beloved love." ||3||3||143|| SGGS 407 ||
