What Does Legalized Marijuana Mean for Sikhs?

By , About.com GuideNovember 15, 2012

Follow me on:

Colorado and Washington joined 18 states which have legalized, or decriminalized, growing and possessing small amounts of marijuana. In most states decriminalization is intended for medicinal only, but in 2012 both Washington and Colorado made recreational use of the hallucinogenic cannabis plant legal for citizens over the age of 21. What does this mean for Sikhs living in those states? Is either recreational or medical use of marijuana allowed in Sikhism?

The Sikh code of conduct and scripture of Guru Granth Sahib are very specific about Marijuana use and what it means to get high in Sikhism.

I think that, when used medicinally, marijuana is no more against gurbani than aspirin!

I would think that for a legitimate medical condition the use of marijuana would be the same as any other drug prescribed by a doctor! Probably better in that it is natural! I would suggest another form of administration rather than smoking!
